MEET KRIS
Kris Haines-Sharp is a former teacher and school administrator running to represent the City of Ithaca’s newly redistricted 2nd Ward on Common Council. She is currently an Alderperson representing the 5th Ward, having been nominated to fill a vacancy and voted in unanimously by Common Council members.
Kris was born in Jordan and raised in Palestine and Israel before attending college in the United States. These formative years influenced Kris’ world view and her commitment to social justice and lifting the voices of the marginalized.
She has taught middle school and high school English and worked with adults and children learning English as a new language. As a school administrator, she thrived in the ever-changing landscape of working with teachers and students. Prior to her work in schools, Kris worked as a baker, a medical assistant for Planned Parenthood, a retail manager for a non-profit. She has also worked in the gig economy as a freelance grant writer and gardener.
Kris brings years of experience in working with city organizations and services, advocating on behalf of youth, serving on non-profits boards and committees. She chairs the Diversity and Inclusion committee for the Finger Lakes Running Club. She has lived in her neighborhood for close to 25 years, raising her children, and growing deep roots and a commitment to service. Kris brings tenacity, curiosity, and a life-long passion for learning to her current role on Common Council and promises to listen, research, and dialogue about the issues before her community and the City of Ithaca.
Common Council appointments:
Kris is a voting member and Council liaison to GIAC, the Greater Ithaca Activities Center, a center for all ages, particularly youth and teens.
She sits on the Program Oversight Committee of the Community Housing Development Fund, a joint effort of the City of Ithaca, Tompkins County and Cornell to increase the supply of affordable housing.
She is a standing member of the City Administration Committee which reviews workforce and human resources items as well as City financial and administrative issues.
Kris sits on the board of the Ithaca Community Gardens and chairs the Diversity and Inclusion Committee for the Finger Lakes Running Club.
